Victory Heights

Today, my husband and I returned to Victory Heights for a 4 mile walk along those streets bordering on the the south fork of Thornton Creek. It's hard to believe that this neighborhood is so close to Northgate and I-5 because all the trees along the creek give a country feel. We walked the streets between Roosevelt Way and 20th Avenue NE from Thornton Creek to Northgate Way plus a few streets north of Northgate Way I had missed on a prior walk.

This area is residential with mostly single family homes. Most (but not all) homes and gardens are well tended and Victory Heights Play Area has a playground, tennis courts and what looks to be a preschool or children's art center.

The area is a mix of flat and hilly terrain but a nice place to walk.

Victory Heights

Today, my husband and I returned to the Victory Heights neighborhood for a 4.6 mile walk. We walked the street between NE 100th Street and Northgate Way from 20th to 24th Avenue NE.

This is a neat neighborhood of single family homes, lovely gardens and lots of dead end streets, some leading to staircases or footpaths.

The south fork of Thornton Creek runs through this neighborhood and it seemed to keep showing up everywhere. Thornton Creek Park #2 is in this area and we saw a sign asking neighbors to help name the parks but the deadline was May 2nd so we were too late.

This area does not have sidewalks or curbs and is quite hilly. Traffic along Lake City Way can be heard along surrounding streets but lots are large and most properties show real pride of ownership.

I will return to walk surrounding streets and get a better look at Victory Heights Playground which we spotted half a block away.

Northwestern Maple Leaf

Today's walk was pretty short, only 2.9 miles of streets but I had already walked a considerable distance doing chores in the Northgate area before starting my walk in the Maple Leaf neighborhood. I walked streets between 5th Avenue and Roosevelt Way NE from NE 102nd to Northgate Way.

These streets were quite mixed with businesses along Northgate Way, the mall, housing complexes and the Northgate Library and Community Center along 5th Avenue, a hospital and apartment complexes along 8th Avenue, single family homes on other streets and Thornton Creek running through it.

There were lots of people walking on Northgate Way and 5th Avenue but not much foot traffic on the other streets.

I went into Green Lake Jewelry Works on Northgate Way just to see what it was and ask why it was named Green Lake (they used to be located there).

The biggest surprise was the number and size of the trees lining Thornton Creek and Thornton Creek Park #6.

PInehurst and Victory Heights

Today's 6.1 mile walk took me back to Pinehurst and Victory Heights. I walked the streets I had missed between NE Northgate Way and NE 117th Street from Roosevelt Way to Lake City Way.

The biggest surprise was Victory Creek Park tucked in behind the QFC parking lot on Northgate Way. The park is small but neat; it's the location that is surprising.

This neighborhood is pretty flat on the western end and hilly on the eastern end near Lake City Way. Traffic was pretty heavy along 15th Avenue NE and it's not a very walker-friendly street.

This neighborhood varies from street to street with some residential streets being quit nice and other streets having mixed uses and/or not reflecting pride of ownership. Some streets had lots of large wheeled vehicles and boats parked in front of houses. I saw a good number of people out walking and a woman tending a lovely garden in the traffic circle on Goodwin Way NE.

This neighborhood is home to the Northgate Idras Mosque,

Aegis Inn (a memory care community), Merrill Gardens Retirement Community,

an Ethiopean restaurant,

a number of ethnic businesses, a fenced compound with three houses inside

and a house with a poster in the window, defining the word "gobsmacked."

Pinehurst and Victory Heights

Today, I walked 6.4 miles in the Pinehurst and Victory Heights neighborhoods.

I walked streets from 17th to 125th Street NE between Roosevelt Way and 22nd Avenue NE.

Close to Roosevelt Way NE, this neighborhood has many newer condo developments and, since it was garbage day, I saw lots of garbage, recycling and yard waste/compost cans. Further east, there are many single family homes

and more gardens.

15th Avenue NE and Pinehurst Way NE have lots of businesses including a newly remodeled Safeway Store

and some African and Middle Eastern shops.

Also located here is The Holy Trinity Eritrean Orthodox T. Church of Seattle.

This neighborhood also houses the Meadowbrook Cooperative Preschool and the Lake City Christian Church.

The Pinehurst Playfield was a pleasant surprise and really added to the neighborhood.

Roosevelt

3.5 miles doesn't cover a lot of territory on a Seattle map but can offer diversity.

On July 3rd, my husband and I strolled in the Roosevelt neighborhood. We walked streets between I-5 and 15th Avenue NE from 64th to 73rd Street.

Roosevelt Way NE is commercial and houses Whole Foods and a QFC grocery store as well as many small shops.

A large part of this neighborhood is occupied by Roosevelt High School and its sports fields.

Calvary Christian Assembly takes up an entire block.

Many properties west of 12th have the look of rental housing but streets east of 12th are better cared for.

We followed a few streets under I-5 and wound up in the Green Lake neighborhood.

I will return to walk Roosevelt Way and check out its many shops and restaurants.
